Rome Easter 2016 – Good Friday in Rome – 25 March 2016
You should be aware also that when visiting Rome for Easter many of major sights will be shut on Easter Sunday and some also on Good Friday and Easter Monday. We would suggest to avoid visiting the Vatican Museums on the day before the closure and the first day after it re-opens as its usually extremely busy and the lines can be hours. But if you have no choice be prepared to go very early to try to beat the lines. The Colosseum will most probably be closed half day on good Friday with the procession there later in the day.
Good Friday in Rome will see Pope Francis retrace Christ’s Via Crucis in a moving candlelit procession. The procession will end with an open-air Mass at St Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday. The Easter procession goes from the Colosseum to Monte Palatino, re-enacting the 14 Stations of the Cross, from Christ’s death sentence to his entombment, with a prayer at each station. Thousands of pilgrims will be there with torches to follow this solemn procession. The procession will coincide with many classical music concerts in churches throughout the city and Rome does have plenty of churches.
